Effect of Kinesio Taping on the Clinical Outcomes of Patients with Subacute and Chronic ‎Low Back Pain: A Single-Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is highly prevalent and imposes a considerable burden, underscoring the need for effective and practical treatment options. This study examined the effects of Kinesio taping on pain intensity and functional disability in patients with subacute or chronic LBP.
Methods: In this single-blind randomized controlled trial, 52 participants were randomly allocated to the Kinesio taping group (n=26) or the control group (n=26). Functional disability and pain intensity were assessed before and after the intervention using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), respectively.
Results: Lumbar pain improved significantly more in the Kinesio taping group than in the control group (P=0.028), whereas no between-group difference was found for radicular pain (P=0.99). Functional disability decreased significantly within both groups (P=0.006 in the intervention group and P=0.028 in the control group), but the between-group difference was not significant (P=0.127).
Conclusion: Kinesio taping may provide an additional short-term benefit in reducing lumbar pain in patients with subacute or chronic LBP; however, no additional benefit was observed for radicular pain or functional disability. Given its accessibility, noninvasive nature, and relatively low cost, it may be considered as an adjunct to conventional treatment.
